SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT INDIAN MUSIC

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT INDIAN MUSIC

It is said that……..

At approximately 4500 BC Indian musical notes were only 3. They were called (sung) as “Aarchik” (आर्चिक), “Geetik” (गीतिक) or “Gaathik” (गाथिक) and “Saamik” (सामिक)

During 2500 -1400 BC this number increased and the added notes were named as “Swaraantar” स्वरान्तर, “Odava” ओडव, “Shaadav” षाडव  and “Sampoorna” सम्पूर्ण

“ Ma Ga Re Sa Ni Dha Pa” was the way of singnig. It was “Maargi Sangeet” based on “Saam Gayan”.

During 1500 – 500 BC “Graam Gana” was popular and the Ragas like “Haripriya”, “Kamboji” and “Bhairav” took their shape.

The musical path followed was based on “Naaradi Shiksha”.

Cronologically, after “Saam Gayan” the styles followed were -

“Gaandharva Gaan”

“Maargi Gaan” and then

“Desi”

The earlier authors were -

Bharat, Kohal, Dattil and Naarad.

(At different times there were different Naarads, since the texts owed to them are written at different periods.)

The earlier texts were –

Naatya Shastra, Sangeet Meru, Dattilam, Naaradi Shiksha, Naaradeeyam, Swararnava and Naarad Samhita.

It was during 9th century AD, Matang established “SHADJA GRAAM” and “MADHYAM GRAAM” in the text Brihaddesi.  In 11th century AD, the text Sangeet Makarand was written and 6 ‘male’ Ragas, their ‘spouses’, and their ‘children’ Ragas were elaborated in it. The author was Naarad 2, who found out 93 Ragas.

During 11th to 13th centuries some more important texts were published. They were –

Sangeet Samayasaar by Paarshvadeva, Sangeet Saar by Vidyaranya and Sangeet Ratnaakar by Sharangdeva.

In 1550 Rama Amatya wrote Swaramela Kalanidhi and he established “Mukhari” as Shudh Mela. During this period the texts published were –

Sangeet Darpan, Raga Tarangini, Raga Vibodh and Sangeet Sudha. Sangeet Sudha was written in 17th century by Govind Dixit, the father of celebrated Pandit Venkatmakhi.

“Janak-Janya theory was established during this time. Venkatmakhi is known for his book Chaturdandi Prakashika and 10 main points he mentioned in that are –

Veena, Shruti, Swar, Mela, Raga, Aalap, Thaay, Geet, Prabandh and Taal. He also elaborated Shadja and Madhyama Graam.

The next important text during the 18th century was Sangeet Saraamrit by Raja Tulajaji Bhosle (1729-35). He explained about Naad, Shruti, Swar, Graam, Jaati, Taan, Raga, Geeti, Vadya, Prabandh, Taal and Natya.

Graam-Moorchhana-Jaati was the system of elaboration during ancient times. Then Raga-Ragini was a popular way to describe the Ragas. There were four accepted principles known as Shiv Mat, Bharat Mat, Kallinath Mat and Hanumat Mat. Raga, Ragini, Putra and Putravadhu system was the most accepted theory of classification.

The trinity of Carnatic music is

Pandit Shyamashastri (1762-1827)

Pandit Thyagaraj (1767-1847)

Pandit Muthuswami Dixit (1776-1835)

How was Carnatic music before the trinity?

“Graam Geya Gaan” (For the common people)

“Aranya Geya Gaan” (For the people in the hermitage, forest dwellers)

“Utta Gaan (Deep music) (For the Yagnas)

Carnatic music from 8th century

The most notable personalities from this period are –

Nayanmaar Alwars, Narayan Teerth, Sadashiv Brahmendra, Purandardas, Haridas,, Annammacharya (1408-1503), Bhadrachala Ramdas, Guru Shanta Kopayati (36000 poems), Haridasas – Narahari Teerth, Shripadraj, Vyasaraj, Vaadiraj

When we talk of modern musicians, theorists and scientists, there are some most important names to be mentioned.

Muthuswamy Dixit lived in Benares. Born and raised in the south, he learnt and then absorbed Hindustani Ragas Hamir Kalyani, Yamuna Kalyani, Vrindavan Sarang, Dvijavanti etc. into Carnatic style. Behag, Desh, Piloo, Madhuvanti, Darbari Kanhada, Dhanshri, Tilang Ragas got their place in Carnatic music from the north by his contribution.

Muthuthandavara (1560-1640), Marumutha Pillai (1712-1787), Arunachal Kaviyar (1711-1778), Otukadu Venkat Kavi (early 18th century), Pichimiriyam Adiyappa (17th or 18th century), Pallavi Gopal Aiyar (17 or 18th), Matrubhutayya (18th century), Margadarshi Shesh Aiyangar (17th century), Ghanam Simayya (1659-1682), Griraj Kavi (1684-1710), Ramaswamy Dixitar, Papavinas Mudliar (18th century), Margadarshi Veerabhadrayya (1741-65), Vijaya Gopal Swami, Mertur Venkat Raman Sastri, Swathi Thirunal are some of the well known names.

"SOMETHING ABOUT NATRAJ"

DATTATREYA

On 29th of December Indians celebrated DATTA JAYANTI. Dattatreya has three heads. The holy trinity is "BRHAMA", "VISHNU" and "MAHESH". One creates, another protects and the third one destructs.

SHIVA

Shiva is known to destruct the unwanted from the earth. The Hindu Puraanas describe the "LEELAS" of Shiva. Here I am not writing about it. I wish to write something about NATRAJA, the dancing form of Shiva.

About Natraj

According to Hindu philosophical thought, Shiva is the first dancer. His name Natraj means the lord of dances and action and his dance in the hall of Chidambaram is the symbolisation of all movement within the cosmos in order to release humanity from the snares of illusion. The dance is in reality a manifestation of his five activities viz. Srishti (creation), Tirobhava (embodiment of the soul and rest) and Anugraha (release and salvation) representing respectively the activities of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh and Sadashiva. Creation arises from the dram protection proceeds from the hand of hope, from fire proceeds destruction, the foot held aloft gives release (Coomarswamy) We are also familier with Krishna and Radha, the eternal lovers, as dancing gods and goddess while Shiva is Natraj, Krishna is known as Natwar, who is the embodiment of spiritual love leading of the individual soul (Jitatma) to join the Divine soul (Paramatma), represented by Krishna.

Brahma was approached by Bharat. At the time of Shiva’s dance, I have seen his graceful style (Kaishiki) appropriate to the exotic sentiments and this is endowed with gentle Agraharas (dance sequences and has sentiments and states Rasa and Bhavas) and action as its soul. This style can not be practiced properly by man except with the help of women. Then Brahma created from his mind nymphs (Apsaras) who were skillful in embellishing the drama.

Where the hand moves, there the eyes follow, where the eyes go, the mind follows, where the mind goes, the mood follows and where the mood goes, there the flavour arises.

ADHYATMA AND SANGEET (In Marathi)

DR. GANGUBAI, DOYENNE OF KIRANA GHARANA

Dnyan Ganga - Gangubai
In Hindutsani music the term "Gharana" is very sacred. It is a continuous flow of abundant resource from each of its followers. The contributors give their 'fair' share to its already rich tradition. The flow emerges full every time, but it never "overflows"! "Kirana Gharana" was established by Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan and Ustad Karim Khan. Here the word 'established' is not proper in this context because Ustad Kareem Khan was touched by a supreme reverberation of emotions, which made him a monk to attain 'Mukti" under the guise of a musician. His experience with this truth made him a founder of a style of singing with bliss. He stretched the cycle of twelve Matras to a very slow tempo, which transformed the Raga into an ocean. In his youth stalwarts in Hindutsani Gayaki lived and made "Khyal" a medium of celestial expression.

Those were the days of the singers with strong voice with mastery over "Laya". A fight with the Tabla accompanist (of course in the playful music) was always there in the performance. The Gharanas like Agra and Gwalior had a total impact of Dhrupad style in their repertoire. Ustad was given the seat of a court singer in Baroda by the Maharaj. At that time he equaled the style of powerful voice and the competitive spirit with other masters was always present in his music.

Once in the royal court he heard the great “Bhoo Gandharv” Rahimat Khan. His humble approach and the deepest presentation of the Raga made a lasting effect on the emotional temperament of the Ustad.

This was the moment when his style changed entirely and he devoted himself to a blissful and very sonorous Gayan. He tried to see God through his Swaras. This moment was supreme for his life and for his creation afterwards. This moment proved to be a seed that emerged as Gayaki with ‘never before’ qualities.

Soon the music lovers began running after him at the venue of his performance. His 'new' style proved to be the foundation of a new stream. Later, it reached the hearts of Sawai Gandharv (the Guru of Dr. Gangubai), Hirabai Badodekar, Sureshbabu Mane and many others. The resourceful qualities of all these greats established the strong foundation of “Kirana Gharana”. (Kirana is the name of the town where Ustad was born). Sawai Gandharv was a great Guru. He followed the Ustad in true spirit. With his own unique way he taught Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Firoz Dastur and Dr. Gangubai Hangal.

The Ragas taught were Todi in the morning, Multani in late afternoon and in the evening it was Puriya. This continued for one year. (Yes, only one Raga was taught for one year or more in those days!) Akka (as she was called by many) continued her learning from him since 1935. Before that she was musically groomed by her mother and then from Krishnammachr. She once sang before ustad Abdul Karim Khan also. She gave her initial performances in 1931 in Mumbai.

HMV recorded her in 32. The first AIR broadcast was in 35. Those were not the days of women liberation. She was to be accompanied by some elders to the Guru’s house. She could not travel to see the Guru’s performance away from Kundgol (the native place of the Guru).Pt. Bhimsenji or Ramdurg Venkanna used to accompany him on Tanpura. In the later period Gangubai began traveling with Guru and had the first hand experience of the concerts of him. It is very important for a Shishya to sit before the Guru to learn as well as to see him perform before the audiences. This experience taught her a lot.

Akka was a very simple lady. She never complained about any inconveniences in her life. She was humble, modest but proud of her tradition. She saw many ups and downs, had very discouraging moments, but she was never wavered from music. She always saw her own life from a distance. This insight towards life was given to her by the gift of music in her soul. She sang many Ragas like Puriya, Todi, Multani, Darbari, Malkans, Abhogi, Devgiri Bilawal, Marubihag, Yaman-Kalyan, Basant, Kedar and many more in her broadcasts and in her concerts. The essence of Kirana Gharana was always potent in her repertoire. She loved all.

She loved all upcoming singers who decorated themselves between two Tanpuras. Her contribution towards classical music was immense. The Sawai Gandharv music festival in Kundgol proved to be a place of worship for the beginners as well as for the established artistes. She was a nymph who held high a torch of knowledge and showed a path of a great tradition of unfathomable music of India.

ANIMAL SKIN FOR PERCUSSIONS

In ancient days, man was a hunter. Hunting animals fulfilled his daily needs for living. He observed that the skin of the animals he hunted, became very hard and stiff after some days. After tanning it he must have seen that it could produce peculiar sound. He then tried striking it with a stick and entertained himself. Since rhythm is an inborn quality of man, he enjoyed dancing on its regular beating.

Some might remember a story in primary school days that a tightened skin of an animal lied under a tree. Accidently a branch of the tree fell on it, which in turn produced a thumping sound. After hearing the sound, a fox was terrified and ran away!

In the Puranas, it is mentioned that Shiva, the god of gods danced after killing demons. The dancing form of Shiva is Natraj, who holds the DAMRU डमरू in one of the four hands he has. The DAMRU is an instrument which looks like a sand timer. Its both ends are covered with monkey skin tightened with a rope at both ends. A thin rope is tightened again in the middle part of the tightened ropes with a small pebble fixed at its end. Shaking the DAMRU rhythmically made the pebble touch the skin at both the ends. It is also believed that the sound produced by DAMRU created basic vowels of ancient Indian language. Elated with the dance of his father, Ganesh beat the drum. This drum was called "BHOO DUNDUBHI" भू दुंदुभि which means a big pit on the ground covered with tightened animal skin, which in turn is transformed into a drum.

Based on the fables and myths, some gods are given credit of creating such ancient instruments. It must be noted that such instruments have not come into being suddenly or by a single individual or by a particular god. An invention has deep roots of experiments done for generations together.

There are instances of Ground Drums, Slit Drums and Wooden Drums in the history. By the passage of time and thanks to scientific progress many instruments took convenient shapes and sizes. It is still in progress.

In ancient days, a hollow in a tree was covered with thin animal skin and it was used as a drum.

Deep pit on the ground was covered by thin planks of a tree, which produced deep sound.

A human skull was also used as a drum and it was struck by bones of hands in stone age. The longer bones of leg were also used as blowing pipes. Other than these parts no other human bones were used as musical instruments.

Skin of bull, buffalo, snake, bigger fish, deer, monkey, elephant have been seen for the use of such drums.

Percussions are known as अवनध वाद्य in Indian way.

TIME CYCLE IN HINDUSTANI MUSIC

"INNOVATIONS" IN MUSIC TEACHING

Innovations

In Music Teaching

Innovation occurs when teaching is corroborated with new ideas and with a novel approach before the inquisitive minds of the students. A topic chosen for instruction may or may not be a new one, but what matters is the way of imparting it. Being a music teacher I have always thought of demonstrating the basic Swaras before the students with some new colour. The basic notes do not vary, they are same and as old as the Vedic rhyms that were sung in the hermitages. They are there for thousands of years. Every nook and corner of this wide country has been singing “SaReGaMa....” and no part of it has changed for centuries. The question here is how one ‘dares to teach’ these Swaras when they are there in every person, whether it is a child or a grown up person.

I believe every person sings in his or her routine life. Some sing loud enough for others to enjoy and some do not! The person sings for self calls him/herself a bathroom singer. Such persons also have music in them. Given an opportunity, they come out of their shell and demonstrate their hidden talent with more enthusiasm. Here no one, including an aficionado expects quality of good music from them. The sole purpose of it is to come out and just sing. Believing in this natural behaviour I always begin with a direct approach. I just start a “Sargam Geet” (a song with only Swaras in it, there are no words in such songs) and ask the students to sing along after listening to it for four to five times. This composition does not belong to any particular Raga. These are just the basic “Shudh Swaras” (pure notes that begin on the white keys of a harmonium keyboard). The result is always positive. Every one sings perfectly! No off-keys! No off-beats! A student who is a complete novice plays this composition on a key board without any single mistake within two or three days of regular practice and encouragement. Most students play rhythmic instruments perfectly along with singing of such compositions within a short period.

How this happens?

A person may be tone deaf but no one ever misses a beat. Rhythm is built in. It is in blood circulation in every nerve of the body. It matches the heart beats of all living persons. Singing along in a group is never a challenge for anyone. Even a person sitting in the auditorium too matches the beats of the performers on the stage with tapping of his/her feet on the ground. This action is natural, not pre-determined. Music is present in every soul. It is of numerous colours. Each one’s music is unique in its own way. It lasts forever. It helps the man to live happily. Every person is well connected with each other through the heartfelt musical pieces. Music merges hearts.

It is seen that the persons attending a music concert have their own groups. As far as possible they do not abandon their company while listening. It is mainly due to a common point of interest among them. A keen observer can see such groups and overhear their comments. They are always truthful, subjective and constructive. They are open to criticism, a healthy criticism. One among them is an accredited writer on music. He openly expresses the views and reviews about the performances. These writings are well accepted by the artistes, organisers and by other common listeners and readers too!

Coming back to innovative way of ‘teaching’ music, I as a conscious teacher just go on singing to be keenly observed by my students. The result is always encouraging. Everyone enjoys and sings. To make my point more clear, I wish to present here a very simple composition of mine. This can be sung with a very simple drum beat of marching, suiting the left-right-left-right.

                        प – ध प म – म –

                        म – प म ग – ग –

                        प – ध प म – प म

As and when this composition is completely and perfectly sung by all, I sing a song based on this ‘tune’. The song is as given below –

First stanza

Very happy we are happy

Let’s celebrate

In the morning everyone is

Feeling great!

Second stanza

Welcome dear guests

Welcome everyone

Very happy moments

You will get!

Third stanza

Cheers and smiles

Dancing steps around

Celebrations and greetings

Everything is set!

Any music teacher can learn and teach this Sargam and the song quickly. I am sure the students would love this to sing and enjoy and learn the basics without much difficulty or prejudice. I have seen hundreds of them enjoyed this ‘song’ and learnt it with enthusiasm. Adding some appropriate actions, it becomes wonderful.

Necessity is the mother of invention

Most of the inventions are born out of necessity to achieve something. Innovative way of teaching of any subject is nothing but a way to make the students understand a fact by going the other way round.

When I was given a class of III on my very first day of job, I was stunned to see a lot of noisy, uncontrollable but very smart children in an Air Force campus. I was not at all trained to handle such a bunch since I was a traditional ‘Gavayya’ of Gwalior Gharana. Suddenly I was feeling myself to be an Arjun standing face to face before the warriors on Kurukshetra. For some minutes I was nervous and was thinking to run away from this ‘lucrative’ job (yes, I was promised Rs. 330+...). The moment I was dreaming to be on the outer side of the massive gate of the campus, a boy asked, “Sir, why are you so silent? Are you not going to teach us something?” Suddenly I was aware of myself and instantly started to sing a song meant for children. In between each line I went out of the way to sing meaningless syllables in tune with the song. Sometimes I made the imitations of the tune with “Tara Rara Tara Rara”. Thoughtfully I sang the Sargam of each line.......

Wow! The children smiled, clapped and copied my tune. They danced, sang my ‘meaningless’ words with gusto. Out of nowhere I got my nerve and I was in seven heavens.

It was like a century on the first test ever.

Since then I had the feeling that I chose this job with correct mind and had made a right decision. After that first nightmare, I thought before on every class, age group and searched for talent among children. The talent was amazing and response was overwhelming. I planned my lessons for each age group and class. Even after nearly thirty years of ‘experience’, each day was new for me. Every child was a challenge before me. Each day was a learning day. So let us smile and learn.
