Pioneer Music Teacher in Hindustani Music
1. Prof. Maula Bux (1833-1896), Maula Bux was born in Bhiwani, Haryana. He was
invited by the Raja Sayajirao of Badoda, who wished to open a school
of music for all. In 1886 it was done and Maula Bux was appointed as the
principal of the school by the Raja.
This school still runs as Music College, Faculty of Performing Arts, MSU
Badoda.
Prof. Maula Bux was considered to be the
finest singer in North India. He was an expert Carnatic musician and a Rudra
Veena player too! After joining he formulated a systematic curriculam to teach
music as a subject, a fact that was established for the first time in the
history of imparting education of music. He developed notating of music and
founded some rules and theoritical basics. He wrote number pieces on music
teaching that were followed later by other universitie. He remained
experimental in the field of performing arts and his willingness to creation and
innovation attracted the Maharaja of Badoda. Afetr his demise in 1886 Ustad’s
son Alluddin was appointed as the principal of music college. He was sent to Europe to study the convergance
of Hindustani and Western music. Thus Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III laid the
seeds of fusion music and Anglo-Indian musical possibilities in those days.
Maula Bux’s grand son Ustad Inayat Khan and later his son Faiyyaz Khan
