Some Similarities in Hindustani And Carnatic Ragas

  Ragas that came from north India into Carnatic music

A lover of Hindustani music is surprised to find some similar Ragas while listening to Carnatic music. Though the presentation differs, the notes attract the listeners since they spread known fragrances.

Pandit Muttuswami Dixit lived in Varanasi to learn the Vedas. There he learnt Hindustani Ragas and blended them with his Sanskaaras in Carnatic music. Well known among them are Ramkali, Dwijawanti (Jayajaywanti), Desitodi, Mahuri, Hameerkalyani, Yamunakalyani and he practiced them on Saraswati Veena.

Before him, the Ragas like Saarang, Paraj, Bihag, Navaroj, Hejujji, Kalingada, Abhiri, Ahiri, Husseni, Kafi, Jhinjhoti etc. had been absorbed into Carnatic music during Sant Purandara Dasa’s period.

Shri Tyagaraja composed his music in Ragas like Kafi, Shudh Desi, Saindhavi, Jangala and many others. The Ragas like Marwa, Pahadi, Gunakri (Gunakali), Poorvi were also modified to suit the rendering in Carnatic style.

 

Let us see which Ragas share both the stages.

 

Dwijawanti, Yamunakalyani, Hamirkalyani, Kafi, Khamaj, Bihag, Darbari Kanhara, Sindhu Bhairavi, Revati (Bairagi), Bageshri, Shankrandanapriya (Shivaranjani), Brindawani Saarang, Bheempalasi, Jaunpuri, Tilang, Maand, Gandhari (Chandrakans), Jangala, Gaud Malhar, Husseni, Aahiri, Paraj are some of these Ragas. Though they bear similar names, they have their own flavour and differ greatly from their Hindustani origin.

    1. . शास्त्रीय संगीतातील अनेक विद्वानांनी सांगितल्याप्रमाणे ज्याना स्वतःला संगीतातील आनंद घेता येतो ते इतर कोणत्याही संगीत प्रकारांना अस्विकृत करणार नाहीतच. आपल्या लेखातील माहितीमुळे कर्नाटक संगीत व हिंदुस्थानी शास्त्रीय संगीतातील भेद दूर होण्यास नक्कीच मदत होईल. पंडित मल्लिकार्जुन मन्सूर यांनी म्हटल्याप्रमाणे आधी आपण आपले संगीत शिकू. या संगीत ज्ञानसागराचा एखादाच अंश आपल्याला कळलेला असतो. तेव्हा याची व्याप्ती समजताना अनेक आयुष्यच निघून जातील. ज्यातून आनंद मिळेल तेच खरे संगीत हे नक्की.

  2. शास्त्रीय संगीताचे व्याप्ती अथांग आहे. दिलेली माहिती चकित करणारी आहे. एक राग सजवता सजवता आयुष्य निघून जातं असं विद्वान म्हणतात. यावरून शास्त्रीय संगीताची व्याप्ती ठरवता येईल. आपले एक किंचित डोके ज्ञान घेण्यासाठी सज्ज असावे.. 👍
